Election Signs - Amendment to Subordinate Local Law
Overview
We recently invited you to provide feedback on the proposed amendment to the display of election signs in our city. Your feedback will help Council consider amendments to the Subordinate Local Law that regulates election signage.
Your feedback will help us:
• to preserve public safety and amenity
• ensure our election signage laws are effective, efficient, and responsive to the needs of our community.
Background
Logan City Council regulates the display of election signage under Local Law No 9 (Licensing) 1999 (the local law) and Subordinate Local Law 9.2 (Election Signs) 1999 (the subordinate local law), to uphold the safety, amenity and environment of the city.
The current Subordinate Local Law currently regulates election signs by:
• Limiting the size to 1.1m2.
• Requiring election signage to be kept in good order and repair.
• Restricting election signage from being exhibited on Council property.
• Requiring election signage to be exhibited in a way that does not constitute a risk to public safety, road safety or obstruct the use of a road.
There is no current limit on the timeframe election signs can be displayed.
Proposed amendment
We are proposing to:
Limit the time period a sign may be displayed before and after an election, meaning that an election sign may only be displayed:
a. in the two month period leading up to a quadrennial local government election or once any other local government election has been announced by the returning officer/Electoral Commission of Queensland; and
b. from the issue of the writ for any State or Federal election; and
c. for up to 1 week after the polling date for any election.
