We are seeking feedback from the community to ensure our plans for the KBF building still reflect community sentiment and expectations. The survey will close on 24 November 2019.
Council is proposing to return the historic Kingston Butter Factory (KBF) building to the community and to reimagine it as a cultural heritage and performing arts hub.
The building will be part of the KBF Cultural Precinct, which will also feature the city's largest outdoor events space (with capacity for an audience of up to 5,000 people and able to host major performances, festivals, markets and large-scale community events).
The move follows a decision by Council in August to no longer locate an innovation hub at the KBF Precinct, but instead pursue other more viable options elsewhere in Logan.
The new proposal for the KBF building is based on previous engagement around community needs and expectations for arts, cultural and entertainment facilities in Logan. It also complements other community infrastructure Council has planned for the City of Logan.
What is the plan? A performing arts space and a 'living museum'
The centrepiece of the reimagined KBF building will be a renewed black box style theatre and a Living Museum of Logan to celebrate the stories of our people, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We will work with our local community to develop content for the living museum.
As well as the theatre, the KBF building is proposed to also include:
- flexible studio space for rehearsals
- multi-purpose function and event spaces
- foyer, reception and box office
- ‘Living Museum of Logan’ to share the city’s cultural heritage and stories of our people
- significant flexible, multipurpose space for events, functions and displays
- meeting rooms.
This reflects feedback from the community in the context of Council's Community Infrastructure Strategy, Arts, Culture and Heritage Strategy, and Destination Management Plan.
When will this happen?
- Site works are already under way to prepare the grounds for the previously planned outdoor stage.
- Construction on the outdoor stage and refurbishment of the KBF building will begin in 2020, along with creation of a new signature entry from Jacaranda Ave, and play spaces in the grounds.
- The KBF Cultural Precinct - the outdoor stage, KBF building and grounds - will aim to open in December 2020.
The survey will close on 24 November 2019 at 11.45pm.
