What is the background of this project?

In March of 2018, Council hosted the Logan Village Forum to engage with industry leaders, local landowners, residents, businesses and developers about the opportunities to unlock the economic and place making potential of Logan Village. 335 submissions were received with 490 ideas generated on the future of Logan Village. The ideas were categorised and summarised and resulted in 52 actions that informed the Logan Village Implementation Plan (Logan+Village+Implementation+Plan.pdf (lcc-docs-planning.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com)) . Five of the 52 actions with the plan were related to improving access and activating the Logan River.

At City wide level Council has endorsed the Logan River Vision 2017 - 2067 (Logan River vision) which identifies projects and actions to realise its potential for residents and visitors to the City. The Logan City Council Corporate Plan 2021-2026 (Corporate plan 2021-2026 (logan.qld.gov.au)) identifies the implementation of the projects and actions as a major project.

What are the opportunities of the Riverfront Precinct?

The Riverfront Precinct plan will seek to unlock the potential of the Logan River by re establishing its connection with Logan Village and providing public access to the River. In the initial pre planning stage of this project the following opportunities were identified:

    1. Environmental Improvement

The health and environmental performance of the Logan River will be a key priority in all actions within the Riverfront Precinct. There are opportunities to enhance riparian zones, improve ecological connectivity, flood resilience and improve education oof the natural processes of the river.

    2. Improved Connectivity

The provision of public access to the river will improve local connectivity and has been identified as a key priority of the Logan Village Implementation Plan (#27). Riverside access will be integrated into the wider movement network including recent improvement to the Logan Village Green, the MyHome and the River Link and the Logan Village to Yarrabilba Rail Trail.

    3. Healthy Lifestyles

Opening up access to the river will encourage people to get out and engage with the environment, walk or cycle within a natural setting. The health benefits of active lifestyles and connections to nature are widely accepted.

    4. Opportunities for Play

A central theme of the Logan River Vision is ‘river play’ and the Riverfront Precinct is a great opportunity to realise many of its related opportunities. Riverside parkland, exercise circuits, tree top walks, walking trails, canoe and kayak access points could all be tested for feasibility within this area.

    5. Economic Catalyst

The aesthetic beauty of the riverside setting is a significant advantage within the Riverfront precinct that could act as a destination. This combined with the potential for active lifestyle pursuits, river and heritage education facilities create a destination offer that could be unique within the City and the wider region.

    6. Heritage Link

The Logan River plays a critical role in both First Nations and settler history within the Logan area. The Riverfront Precinct plan provides an opportunity to pay respect to both and ensures the future of the land is informed by its past.
