Consultation on the draft Disability Action Plan 2023-2025 has now closed.
Timeline:
- In June and July 2022, Council asked for community feedback on how to improve access and inclusion for people with disability in the City of Logan.
- We incorporated the voices of people with disability, their friends, families, support workers, and service providers into the draft Disability Action Plan 2023-2025.
- We invited the community to have their say on the draft plan from 15 December 2022 to 05 February 2023.
- We reviewed feedback from the community between February and March to identify if we needed any new actions.
- Key themes in the feedback included:
- The accessibility of public infrastructure. For example, improved accessibility of Council-owned pathways, toilets, parking, pools, libraries, road crossings, bus stops.
- More employment opportunities for people with disability within Council, and in the City of Logan more broadly.
- Better disability awareness and inclusion in the community. For example, awareness of invisible disability, support for community groups and businesses to be more inclusive.
- Some of the feedback was outside the scope of local government responsibilities/influence. For example, NDIS services and funding, school infrastructure, Disability Employment Services, QLD police, private business.
- Most of the feedback will be addressed by actions in the draft plan, or by business-as-usual activities.
- We included 2 x new actions in the plan.
- The Final Disability Action Plan 2023-2025 was endorsed by Council 22 March 2023.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that provided input into the new draft plan – your feedback has been invaluable. We look forward to implementing the actions in this plan over the next two years.

TCalmost 2 years agoAcknowledge inclusive employers publicly. Provide council incentives.
Council is doing a good start by providing traineeships for people with disability across their services. It would be great to make this program better known and expand the offerings. Let local businesses know about the incentives provided for employers who employ someone with a disability and let them know about success stories. Local companies like Locatrix who employ a majority of people with disabilities in mainstream employment, need to be applauded.
0DeeLoganalmost 2 years agoUnder challenge chronic health condition disability
The current disability framework seems to cater to outward manifestations of disability for example those requiring wheelchairs or mobility accessories. There are chronic health conditions like M.S that aren't visible to the public. Disability job centre staff in my experience, do not have the training, experience, compassion or funding model to meet the needs of my group. For example, mandatory 8 hours per week to receive funding and the top down pressure to perform so a centre can get their funding. 2ndly employers describing the job criteria arrangements rather than the employee describing how they can value add to a workplace and under what terms. The option to work from home needs to be explored more with flexible time frames that revolve around delivery of an outcome with an end date rather than a daily performance timeline. Vaccine mandates have also been prohibitive for work.

DeeLoganalmost 2 years agoDesign of accessible homes
Liveability needs to be added to the framework of accessible homes. Especially access to outside spaces next to the home and sunlight and aspect into the homes. The current trend is to have housing with little to no space surrounding it so that natural sunlight cannot flow or stream through the windows, nor is their any aspect from those windows, nor can someone walk around their entire property. Tasmania has a number of retirement villages which were designed to enhance these issues.
0 comment0TCalmost 2 years agoDeveloper rebates from council - small change
Would be great if council could provide rebates, incentives, etc on fees for developers who make 5% or more of the homes in a development more accessible and disability friendly (based on a list of council guidelines). Ramps - not stairs, single story, larger bathroom with rails, etc. Then an incentive of reduced rates on that property for 5 years if rented to person with disability.

TCalmost 2 years agoCouncil engagement with developers and existing centres to ensure safe access.
There is no safe disabled access to Marsden Library from the road, if you arrive via bus. A great job was done when the bus stop was upgraded at Logan Central Plaza, with access to the shopping Centre, but there is no access from the road to the MPs offices (state and federal), or to the Woolworths complex. This could be addressed through public/private partnerships when roadworks are undertaken, or footpaths upgraded.

0 comment0TCalmost 2 years agoPWD panel meeting regularly with council
When major projects are being undertaken (new council infrastructure or redevelopment - such as Butter Factory), that a group of people with various disabilities are consulted and have a say in inclusive measures which will make these projects world class. This consultation group could meet monthly to discuss ideas for events (Eats and Beats, etc), programs (Active and Healthy, etc) to increase inclusion and accessibility.
0 comment0TCalmost 2 years agoCouncil to honestly evaluate the accessibility they provide to ensure it is appropriate to need.
Beenleigh Police Station road disabled park has the access ramp at the front end of the car, which blocks the ramp when parked. Bega Park (West Bega Road, Kingston) has wonderful walkways, footpaths amenities and connects to the council bikeway/pedestrian paths, but no access - there is a single cut out in the gutter (very steep) which is not associated with access from the footpath across the road and not connected to any path in the park itself (in fact access is blocked by narrow gap between the wooden railings).
0 comment0LJLalmost 2 years agoConsultation with PwD
Please consider having an average manual wheelchair user consult and trial the proposed design of new accessible pathways/cut downs prior to installation. I would suggest, based on my experience on newly installed projects in Logan, it would likely increase the chances of making them truly inclusively and universally designed.

TCalmost 2 years agoLoss of water supply due to planned or emergency outages
Some people with disabilities have additional needs for access to water. Council does have capacity to ensure drinking water, but what about larger supplies of water that can be delivered to needy households for incontinence management, etc?
0 comment0TCalmost 2 years agoDisaster preparedness
There are appropriate facilities that could support people with disabilities in the event of evacuation, they are just no being utilised. There is a need to look at how longer term power outages and loss of water supply affect people with disabilities, and how council can better support people in these situations - they may need evacuation, even if there is no immediate threat from flood or bushfire.
