Background information

In July 2019, Interim Administrator Tamara O'Shea endorsed the Transition to Council Plan, which identified Broader Community Engagement as a priority area: "Review the Community Engagement Strategy to identify opportunities to further engage with all sectors of the Logan community".

In October 2019, Council engaged an external consultant to undertake a review of the Community Engagement Strategy as well as the current Community Engagement Framework. The Framework guides how Council officers work with community to make informed decisions. So we need to make sure it is understandable and accessible for everyone.

The combined review of the Strategy and Framework will show us what else we can do to achieve broader community engagement in the City of Logan.

In February 2020, a report was submitted to the Interim Administrator that included;

  • the updated draft Community Engagement Strategy, and;
  • the draft Community Engagement Framework.

In April 2020, full Council endorsed the draft Community Engagement Strategy 2020 - 2022 to be released for community consultation.

    Community engagement activities undertaken by Council will encompass a set of guiding principles. These guiding principles need to be at the center of engagement planning and implementation. They will also form the indicators from which engagement practice can be measured and evaluated.

    Guiding Principle 1.

    Integrity – when there is openness and honesty about the scope and purpose of engagement so that the community trusts the process.

    Guiding Principle 2.

    Inclusion – when there is an opportunity for a diverse range of values and perspectives to be freely and fairly expressed and heard.

    Guiding Principle 3.

    Deliberation – when there: a. is sufficient and credible information for discussion, choice and decisions, and b. is space to weigh options, develop common understanding and to appreciate respective roles and responsibilities.

    Guiding Principle 4.

    Influence – when people have input in: a. designing how they take part b. when policies and services reflect their involvement, and c. when their impact is clear and understood.

    Guiding Principle 5.

    Relationships – when there is respect for the relationship between us and the community so that we work to understand, develop and learn from engagement with our community.

    We want you to help us define our guiding principles by joining the discussion below.
